The Characters of the Trilogy (In order of appearance) Jarrett—Known as Gerrald
on Earth, when he stumbles into Kimyra as a 12-year-old, he finds that
they are expecting him, or at least someone named Jarrett. What they were
expecting him to do was steal the eyes of a dragon. Monica—A cheerleader who went to school with
Gerrald, though she didn’t notice him. Years later, when a book he
writes about Kimyra makes him famous, she does take notice. Eventually
they marry and she becomes a well-known model and B movie actress. Valven—A Manx cat known as
Velvet on Earth, Valven leads Jarrett into the cave that connects Earth to
Kimyra through a wormhole. He has lived other lives on Kimyra. He
remembers dying in the Battle of the Blind Desert. Skitter—This furry little
ribek is about the size of a rabbit. He has shorter ears, though, and
looks a little like a koala bear. Skitter’s eye sockets tip toward each
other when he is confused (which is fairly often). He “discovered”
Jarrett on Kimyra. Verthanda—She is a beautiful seeress when Jarrett
meets her. At least he thinks she is beautiful, and is surprised to learn
that she is a troll. Verthanda sees a few seconds into the future, but is
blind to the present. That is because she is also a wizard who wears
dragon-guiding lenses on her eyes. Emralla—At first this
white Kimyran cat sets off as one of the trekkers who try to help Jarrett
retrieve the eyes of the dragon. It turns out she is a spy for the Black
Wizard, Mantigore. Whirly—He may be the only
wallacatoon on Kimyra. He has three trunk-like legs that support a furry,
round body. Each leg/trunk serves as a mouth; each trunk talks in a
different voice. Gelmorra—The White Dragon Verthanda keeps in her
strange home, which is also called Gelmorra. Gelmorra is eyeless and
frozen in place when Jarrett arrives. Hugger—He and two fellow
trolls capture the trekkers in Book One. He reluctantly joins them on
their quest when they learn Emralla’s connection to Mantigore. Corvet—This gryphon saves
Jarrett’s life and becomes a trusted advisor. Gryphons on Kimyra are
telepathic. Corvet is suspicious of “mouth-talk.” He is able to fly
only because he eats a plant called freenel. Petta—Both her name and her
species are Petta. She is a blue beast of burden a bit bigger than a
sheep. What seems to be fur is actually a blue fungus growing on hide
tougher than that of a rhinoceros. She can say a few words and is mildly
telepathic. Mantigore—He is the Black Wizard who rules Kimyra
when Jarrett first arrives. The boy from Earth is expected to steal the
eyes from his dragon. Morra—The Black Dragon belongs to the Black Wizard,
Mantigore. He lives in Morra Castle, which is in the Morra Mountains. Kat—The redheaded daughter
of Gerrald/Jarrett and Monica, who are divorced when we meet her. She is
beginning to disbelieve her father’s book about going to Kimyra when he
was about her age. When Skitter shows up in her bedroom, she knows the
book is true. She follows Skitter to Kimyra, where she becomes the Red
Wizard. Zethenna—She likes to
be called Her Wizardness and has a special relationship with the flying
spider-like insects called scralers. Zethenna is the daughter of Verthanda
and Mantigore and is preparing herself to rule Kimyra when Kat arrives on
the scene. Lorp—Zethenna’s servant,
Lorp is a whelpnong. He is a little like a walking frog who has a
kangaroo’s pouch. Lorp is very intelligent and much, much older than he
seems. Burbur—One of
Zethenna’s guards who risks his life for Kat and Her Wizardness. He is a
bandrang. They are purple, scaly creatures with huge fangs and sharp
claws. They make bad enemies and good friends. Marven—When the trekkers of the Book Two escape
through the Kimyra pack into another world, they meet a troll named
Marven. He loves nothing better than zooming across the sand in his war
machine, terrorizing mounders. Norly—Another bandrang, he works for Mantigore, but
switches sides to protect the Red Wizard and Zethenna.
